Community Solar is an emerging industry and way to implement a large scale renewable energy and make the energy generated available to a distributed community. Simply put, we build a photovoltaic array in typically unused or undevelopable land, and then send the energy to households and businesses that have signed up to buy discounted, renewable energy from the array. The beauty of Community Solar is the photovoltaic array does not need to be in or visible to the community, as long as the array is connected to the grid that powers those households and businesses. It is an effective way to deploy a large amount of renewable, green energy without the array impacting the local economy.
Furthermore, most community solar projects are financed and owned by large national power companies that agree to sell that generated power at a fixed rate for the lifetime of the array in a Power Purchase Agreement. This PPA also stipulates that the developer is responsible for a minimum amount of energy provided, so they are heavily incentivized to ensure the community solar array is producing optimally and delivering energy to the community.
